The Viking radio science investigations use the highly accurate radio tracking and communications systems data from the Viking orbiters and landers to perform a number of analyses concerning properties of Mars and its environment. This paper gives a general description of the investigations and of the instrumentation used; detailed results are presented in the companion papers.
