A formula describing the net flux of mass across latitude walls in the atmosphere is derived which is particularly well suited for evaluation with data from a network of hemisphere upper-air stations. The formula is nearly exact, involving a minimum of assumptions, and accounts for contributions made by both mean and eddy processes. As such, it stands in contrast to the traditional formulation for the net mass flux and hence serves to illustrate the simplifications involved in the latter.
