The generally accepted notion that vertical transport between levels in the atmosphere can be represented by an eddy diffusion coefficient which satisfactorily represents the true physical processes is questioned. Carbon monoxide distributions can apparently be explained without invoking the one-dimensional model results that predict large sources from methane.
