Broecker, W.S., Peng, T.-H. and Stuiver, M. (1978). An estimate of the upwelling rate in the equatorial Atlantic based on the distribution of bond radiocarbon. Journal of Geophysical Research 83: doi: 10.1029/JC080i012p06179. issn: 0148-0227.

As shown by the Geosecs results the equatorial Atlantic Ocean has both a lower water column inventory and a lower surface water concentration of bomb-produced radiocarbon than do the temperate waters to the north and south. This anomaly can only be explained by equatorial upwelling. For the equatorial zone as a whole this rate must be about 17 sverdrups.
