As shown by the Geosecs results the equatorial Atlantic Ocean has both a lower water column inventory and a lower surface water concentration of bomb-produced radiocarbon than do the temperate waters to the north and south. This anomaly can only be explained by equatorial upwelling. For the equatorial zone as a whole this rate must be about 17 sverdrups. |
