Ground level gravity waves have been detected on an array of three microbarographs operated in the Ballarat region of Victoria during the period October--December 1974. A number of occasions of enhanced microbarograph activity were observed. The period of these waves had a sharp cutoff for frequencies greater than about 2.5¿10-3 Hz with propagation velocities of from 5 to 35 m s-1. The duration of enhanced activity was from 3 to 50 hours. Comparison with meteorological data obtained during enhanced microbarograph activity indicated that the southern hemisphere polar front jet at the 300-mbar level was the probable source of the gravity waves. Comparison of theoretically calculated characteristics of the wind shear-generated gravity waves and the experimentally observed ones shows reasonable agreement. |
