Breeding's integral representation of a wave packet is criticized because of its failure to include directional integration. Utilizing a standard definition of group velocity, it is shown that, for linear gravity waves in the ocean, phase and group velocities are in the same direction, contrary to breeding's assertion of a difference based on his definition of a ''geometric'' group velocity.
