An analysis of four monthly surveys of the Agulhas Current in 1973 revealed a meander of 200-km amplitude off the southern African east coast. The phase velocity of the advecting meander is estimated at 20 cm s-1 in a southwesterly direction, and evidence was found of weak upwelling in a cyclonic eddy trapped inside the meander.
