Directionally resolved records of sferic burst counts were acquired from thunderstorms during April-June 1977. Three tornadoes were reported, two being confirmed as hook echoes on National Weather Service radar. The sferic burst rates, plotted as a function of 2 min intervals, showed a 4--6 min period of relative inactivity followed by an abrupt enhancement of the burst rate. Numerous investigators have reported an enhancement of sferic activity associated with tornadic storms; however, these results do not indicate a lull in sferics immediately prior to the enhancement. The bimodal distribution of sferic activity has not been observed within nontornadic storms by this laboratory.
