A simple model of turbulent mixing induced by a breaking internal gravity wave implies that one quarter of the kinetic energy lost goes into potential energy. The model is based on a critical Richardson number concept. The conceptual model and some numeric trials simulate the experiment of Thorpe (1973) quite well.
