Fission and activation products analysis of aircraft swipe samples by high-resolution Ge(Li) spectrometry shows that the Chinese nuclear test of October 16, 1980, was a thermonuclear explosion carried out at low altitude. Most of the activity from this test appears to have fallen out in a year's time, as indicated by the activity ratios of selected fission products.
