The concentrations of long-lived radon dautghers have been measured in the exhausts of 11 volcanoes throughout the world. More particularly, the 210Po activities measured were 105-106 times higher than in a typical atmosphere. A total volcanic 210Po output of 5¿104 Ci/yr can be estimated by balancing the total deposition (9¿104 Ci/yr), the atmospheric production (3¿104 Ci/yr), and the other extra sources (1¿104 Ci/yr) of this nuclide. Therefore it seems possible to normalize the volcanic production of volatile elements to this 210Po output. |
