Ocean current observations made by drifting buoys, SOFAR floats, and current meters are combined to produce the first section of eddy kinetic energy through the Gulf Stream and subtropical gyre along 55¿ W. Eddy kinetic energy peaks at 2000 cm2 s-2 in the surface Gulf Stream near 39 ¿N and decreases latitudinally and vetically to a low of 0.5 cm2 s-2 in the abyssal gyre interior (4000 m, 28 ¿N). Still further south, eddy energy increases slightly in the region of the North Equatorial Current. |
