The circulation pattern proposed by Bigelow (1927) included a major current of water flowing southward off the southern side of Georges Bank. This pattern is not consistent with recent long-term current measurements that show that the water there moves westward along the bank isobaths. The measurements made by Bigelow are reviewed to show that a Gulf Stream ring was located south of the bank during his observations and that the ring was likely entraining water off the Georges Bank, consistent with Bigelow's observations. |
