The influence of a decaying surface wave field on currents and water level variations in three dimensions. The purpose is to show that surface waves have an influence on current generation outside, as well as inside, the surf zone. Therefore, the wave-induced source terms for current generation are implemented into a depth-integrated current model. The resulting currents and water level changes of the numerical simulation of a hypothetic wind and wave field over a gently sloping bottom show that wave-induced source terms should be included in current and water level models. This inclusion must lead to a revision of model parameters in the wind and bottom stress, which are used to tune the numerical models to meet the observations. Since the observations already include wave setup effects, these heave been partly included in the model constants. A comparison between observations and a numerical model with wave-induced sources will lead to a readjustment of wind- and bottom-induced sources. This task is left for future work.
