There is a discontinuity in density across the Bahama Banks. On the western side of the banks, beneath the mixed layer, iospycnals are about 100 m shallower than on the eastern side. An explanation is offered in terms of a reduced gravity layered lodel of an inertial western boundary current forced to flow through a channel (the Florida Straits) which is narrower than its open ocean scale width.
