Data from cruises of the Meiring Naude in 1978 delineated an intense cyclonic eddy in the vicinity of 30¿S, 38¿E and extending to a depth of more than 1800 m. Between May and June 1978 the eddy advected to the southeast at 5 cm s-1. The eddy was elliptical (90¿240 km), and the volume transport varied between 20 and 48¿106 m3s-1.
