The circulation of the African Current along the north coasts of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia is shown by seasonal satellite imagery to normally consists of a series of complex anticyclonic eddies that propagate eastward. The large surface area associated with the eddy field illustrates significant amounts of coastal and modified Atlantic waters that are entrained, and the eddies compose the bulk of the net eastward transport. Analysis of the satellite imagery indicates that the turbulent shear produced by the current interacting with the African coast results in the advection of coastal waters into the modified Atlantic water already contained in the eddy field. The biological activity and chemical reactions spawned by the resultant mixing is clearly observed in the ocean color variations depicted in Nimbus 7 coastal zone color scanner (CZCS) visible imagery. The extent of the offshore advection is indicated in the imagery by the high sediment concentrations that border the periphery of the eddies. Sea surface temperature shown by both Nimbus 7 CZCS and NOAA 7 AVHRR (advanced very high resolution radiometer) infrared imagery also illustrate complex flow, although in some imagery the ocean color imagery better defines the patterns. Applications of both visible (ocean color) and thermal imagery are suggested as a method of best determining the patterns of regional flow.
