The wind and temperature fields over the Indian and Pacific oceans have been analyzed to study the coupling between the two oceans on the time scale of the Southern Oscillation. The analysis shows the propagation of zonal wind anomalies from the western Pacific Ocean toward the date line together with the displacement of a pool of warm water. There is some indication of a zone of convergence over the equatorial Indian Ocean. The results seem to rule out a direct propagation of a signal from the Indian Ocean toward the Pacific Ocean, as the signal in the former ocean lags that in the latter. |
