Jonasz, M. (1987). The effect of nonsphericity of marine particles on light attenuation. Journal of Geophysical Research 92: doi: 10.1029/JC080i013p14637. issn: 0148-0227.

The assumption that the projected area of marine particles equals the projected area of spheres with volumes equal to those of the particles can result in a significant underestimation of calculated attenuation of light by the particles. This underestimation can reach 300%, depending on the refractive index and size distribution of the particles. ¿ American Geophysical Union 1987
