Long-term inverted echo sounder records along and north of the equator in the Atlantic are analyzed to show the dominance of equatorially trapped and eastward propagating disturbances with first baroclinic mode Kelvin wave characteristics in the frequency band of 10-1 to 40-1 (cycles day-1). Propagation speed is estimaged as 2.35 ¿ 0.22 m s-1 along the equator from 34¿W to 1¿W. Coherence is present to 3N but absent at 6¿N (from mooring data) and 9¿N. Coherence is shown with the zonal wind stress observed in midbasin, and it is suggested that the origin of the disturbance is not far from 40¿W. ¿American Geophysical Union 1987 |
