Eulerian velocity fields beneath an air-water interface in a laboratory facility have been determined for the case of wind-ruffled mechanically generated waves of 22-mm amplitude and 1-Hz frequency, with wind speeds ranging from 1.7 to 6.2 m s-1, and in a wave-following coordinate system. The velocity was measured with a two-component wave-following laser Doppler anemometer. The wave-following data are compared with non-wave-following data under similar flow conditions. The results demonstrate that the waves affect the mean flow, even though the mean profiles remain essentially logarithmic. The wave-following results appear as extensions of fixed-frame results to shallower depths. ¿ American Geophysical Union 1988 |
