As part of the U.S. Naval Ocean Research and Development Activity's Regional Energetics Experiment, 12 inverted echo sounders (IESs) were deployed from June 1985 to July 1986 in two arrays across the historical mean path of the Gulf Stream near 67¿W and 58¿W, slightly upstream and downstream of the New England Seamount chain. Gulf Stream positions and directions were computed at half-day intervals for adjacent IES pairs. Levels of variability at the two array locations were similar, but the characteristics of the meanders, in terms of propagation and current direction, were quite different. Evidence was found for a quasi-stationary meander neaer 58¿W. Features deduced from IES measurements are compared with concurrent infrared, air-dropped expendable bathythermograph, and Geosat altimetry observations. |
