A simple model based on conservation of stream function and potential vorticity is used to derive theoretical estimates for the horizontal and vertical displacements of fluid particles in Gulf Stream meanders. These displacements are given as functions of the meander's curvature and meridional displacement. The theory also provides an estimate of the translation speed of the meander. Finally, comparisons with RAFOS float trajectories and observational estimates of the components of the potential-vorticity budget validate the theory. ¿American Geophysical 1993
