If a surface (barotropic) tide passes through a baroclinic eddy field, the nonlinear terms produce, among others, internal waves having near-tidal frequency but wavelength and vertical mode structure as given by the eddy field. Stationary eddy fields yield stationary internal tides, whereas moving eddy fields yield modulated, progressive internal tides. These internal tidal currents have amplitudes in the range of observations, 1--3 cm s-1. ¿ 1999 American Geophysical Union
