To study the behavior of stratospheric ozone over the Indian region after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in June 1991, Dobson total ozone data recorded for 20 years over the Indian region between 10 and 28 of latitude north are examined. No significant decrease in total ozone after the Mount Pinatubo eruption is apparent. Ozonesonde observations at Pune (18.3 ¿N, 73.6 ¿E) and balloon measurement of aerosol profile at Hyderabad (17.5 ¿N, 78.6 ¿E) show that the altitude of the ozone peak is about 5 km higher than the altitude of the aerosol peak. Stratospheric NO2 column observations at Ahmedabad also do not show any appreciable change in their values after Pinatubo eruption. These observations suggest that heterogeneous reactions do not play a significant role to reduce total ozone after volcanic eruption in the low-latitude region.¿ 1997 American Geophysical Union
