A numerical model of the ion flow in the vicinity of a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line operating in corona has been developed. The model solves the system of equations governing electrical potential and positive and negative ion concentrations in bipolar coordinates and includes the effect of horizontal wind. The model predicts the downwind space charge plume and ionic current densities at ground similar to those measured near power lines.
