Our present understanding of the microsecond- and submicrosecond-scale electric and magnetic fields generated by lightning return strokes is reviewed. First, the experimental data for strokes lowering both negative and positive charge are discussed. Then theory relating the remotely measured fields to the channel currents is presented. The significant gaps in our understanding of the return stroke fields are identified.
