Measurements of shortware and long-wave irradiance were made from the NOAA ship R/V Oceanographer during the Storm Transfer and Response Experiment (STREX) near 50 ¿N, 140 ¿W during the autumn of 1980. Long-wave exitance was calculated from observed sea surface temperature. Shortwave exitance and albedo were calculated from smoothed observations of R. E. Payne relating albedo to solar zenith angle and shortwave transmittance. Daily net radiation balances ranged from +9.3 to -43.3 W m-2. A model of shortwave irradiance adapted from F. E. Lumb gave results to within 10 W m-2, averaged over most 5-day periods. An abridged form of a long-wave irradiance model, developed by the authors, was compared to measurements. This model was found to have similar accuracies when applied to data from STREX and when applied to data from the 1978 Joint Air-Sea Interaction (JASIN) Experiment.
