We present the results of a statistical analysis of mesospheric wind fluctuations with periods in the range 5 min to 8 hours. The data were collected with the SOUSY VHF radar by observing line-of-sight Doppler velocities sequentially in three directions. The temporal spectrum is computed for the vertical fluctuations as well as for line-of-sight fluctuations on two oblique beams at 3.6¿ zenith angle separated by 90¿ in azimuth. The observed spectra are shown to be mutually consistent if interpreted in terms of a field propagating gravity waves. Using the three-beam data, the temporal spectrum for the underlying gravity waves is obtained; the height dependence of the line-of-sight component of the mean square wave amplitudes is also studied. ¿ American Geophysical Union 1988 |
