Two approaches are presented to retrieve the desert aerosol optical thickness over land from satellite. One approach uses the infrared imagery, and the other uses contrast reduction in visible imagery. The retrieved aerosol optical thicknesses from Meteosat data are shown in good agreement with simultaneous ground-based measurements.
