Relative values of the quantum yield, &PHgr;*(λ), of O( 1D2) from the photolysis of ozone in the wavelength region 221--243.5 nm have been measured by observing the weak 630-nm fluorescence from the spin forbidden O(1D2)→O( 3P) transition. The relative quantum yield was determined at 243.5, 235, 231, 228.5, and 221.5 nm, with the value of &PHgr;*(221.5 nm) equal to 0.87¿0.04 agreeing with a recent O(3P) resonance fluorescence measurement made at 222 nm. Additionally, the results point to a significantly lower quantum yield at short wavelengths than that currently recommended for stratospheric models. The results of this experiment, when placed in context with previous studies, confirm a trend toward a decreasing quantum yield at shorter wavelengths observed in earlier work. ¿ American Geophysical Union 1992 |
