Gradients of the amounts and carbon isotope compositions of the lipids and total organic carbon were observed in the near surface sediments around an offshore production platform in the Gulf of Mexico. The gradients may be due to the presence of petroleum-derived residues from cuttings-derived material redeposited during drilling operations or from a spill of some 30,000 barrels of petroleum that occurred at the platform three year earlier.
