Griscom, D.L. (1976). Comment on: ’’FMR thermomagnetic studies’’ by Morris et al. Geophysical Research Letters 3: doi: 10.1029/GL003i004p00232. issn: 0094-8276.

Morris et al. [1975> have reported ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) thermomagnetic studies of lunar soils and potential lunar analogue materials up to 900¿C. They were thereby able to demonstrate that glasses containing magnetitelike phases as the sole ferromagnetic constituent are not lunar soil analogues. Although they did not explicitly take note of the fact, their data also show that glasses containing metallic iron as their sole magnetic constituent are not lunar soil analogues either. Irreversible FMR intensity losses observed for the lunar soils upon heating above 650¿C, but not for similarly handled glasses containing only iron particles ~100¿, can be explained by the co-presence of both fine-grained iron and fine-grained magnetitelike phases in the lunar soils. This explanation is supported by previous thermomagnetic studies concerned with the integrated area under the FMR absorption curve.
