|
The results of several paleomagnetic determinations using independent methods and a wide variety of rocks from different continents are surprisingly compatible and suggest the following pattern of paleomagnetic intensity: a minimum in the mid-Paleozoic, an increase from then to the Mesozoic, a maximum in the Mesozoic, and a decrease from then to the Pleistocene. Variations in ancient field strength during and since the Paleozoic are of great importance to the origin and mechanism of the earth's magnetic field. |
