In this paper I examine the published uplift and gravity data on the Palmdale bulge in light of two possible mechanisms for the uplift, dilatancy and thrust faulting. A method for computing the gravity anomalies is formulated which eliminates the pole in the integrand. The method is of general utility and can be applied to any problem which requires numerical integration of a potential equation. The gravity integrals are evaluated numerically and the results are plotted. On the basis of both the gravity and uplift computations, I conclude that the Palmdale uplift is more consistent with thrust faulting than it is with dilatancy.
