It is shown that in the vicinity of the midplane of the magnetotail the By component and the Bz component (in solar-magnetospheric coordinates) of the magnetic field during substorms are usually comparable and often vary systematically together. Thus, the usual practice of representing the substorm configuration of the field as lying entirely in the noon-midnight plane may be misleading.
