Using a horizontally stratified model of the solar atmosphere, we argue that appreciable fast wave fluxes of solar origin may not be able to propagate into the solar wind. Fast waves may thus not be a significant source of extended heating and acceleration of the solar wind. This conclusion could be altered by nonlinearity and/or by complex structure of the solar atmosphere, however.
