It is shown that the dayside and the nightside arc systems of the auroral oval are topologically distinct, although they constitute an annular belt of auroras, the auroral oval. It is suggested that the dayside arc system is associated with field-aligned currents fed by the low-latitude boundary layer dynamo, while the nightside arc system is associated with field-aligned currents fed by the magnetotail dynamo.
