Showstack, R. (2004). Stable water usage, but some groundwater concerns, USGS report indicates. Eos, Transactions American Geophysical Union 85: doi: 10.1029/2004EO120003. issn: 0096-3941.

Water use in the United States has remained fairly stable since 1985, according to an 11 March report by the U.S. Geological Survey. The report, which estimates water use for the year 2000--the most recent available data--indicates that Americans used an estimated 408 billion gallons of water per day, an amount the agency said would fill 8 billion bathtubs daily. The usage also translates into 1,430 gallons used per person per day, when including all uses, including electric power generation, irrigation, and personal use.
