Hydrophone recordings from 1962 through 1974 have been examined for evidence of high-frequency, mantle-refracted P phases from underground nuclear explosions and from major earthquakes at comparable distances. While observable P phases are found for all Russian underground explosions with yields in excess of 270 kilotons, no such phases are found for earthquakes at comparable distance.
