A method for determining the visible absorption coefficient of stratospheric aerosols is presented. The first eight samples had a median value of 4¿10-9m-1, with an uncertainty of about ¿5¿10-9m-1. The resulting estimated single-scattering albedo was in the range 0.96--1.0.
