Experimental static high-pressure data on the volume equation of state of the B1 and B2 phases of CaO in the range 1 bar-650 kbar agree with existing low-pressure data and with an equation of state calculated from shock-wave experiments. The density of the B2 phase is close to that of the lower mantle, so the properties of CaO could be consistent with theories of the earth's formation by inhomogeneous accretion.
