Archaeomagnetic measurements on a kiln though to be operating at the time of the Pompeii disaster, 24th August 79 A.D., indicates a normal field direction with an archaeointensity value of 61 microtesla. The low error and precise date makes this an important reference point to which other less accurately dated results can be compared.
