The assignment of a rate coefficient on the order of 1¿10-11 cm3 molec-1 s-1 to the reaction O(1S)+O(3P)→O+O is erroneous. Previous experiments have not taken into account the presence of O2(a1Δg) in the O(3P) atom streams, and it is demonstrated that O2(a1Δg) is the O(-1S) quencher in these studies, with a rate coefficient of (1.7¿0.3)¿10-10 cm3 molec-1 sec-1. The consequences of such a rapid reaction are discussed in terms of mesopheric and auroral modeling. |
