We investigate the latitudinal variations of the sources of tropospheric odd nitrogen (NOy) due to lightning discharges and stratosphere--troposphere exchange. By also considering the latitudinal variation of the removal rate in rainout we calculate the NOy distributions in the troposphere using a one-dimensional model. We then discuss the implications of the characteristic latitudinal gradients of NOy due to these two sources in view of the GAMETAG measurements in the free troposphere.
