In this paper, a class of uniformly spaced linear arrays that we call the generalized Chebyshev arrays is introduced. For the proposed arrays, the array factor is the product of the array factors of several conventional Chebyshev arrays, the directivity is higher than that of the conventional and the modified Chebyshev arrays, and the beam width and the excitation currents ratio are smaller than those of the modified Chebyshev arrays. The sidelobes in the pattern of a generalized Chebyshev array are not of equal magnitude, but the maximal sidelobe level is controllable. Methods for computing the excitation currents, half-power beam width, and optimum element spacing of these arrays are developed, and exact values of their directivity are obtained. The features of the proposed arrays are illustrated through numerical examples.
