We have compared power spectra of Manley's record of central England temperatures for the Maunde minimum with later periods. We find that the power in the ~23 year cycle is statistically significant in the Maunder minimum portion of this temperature time series. This gives indirect support to the recent suggestion that the solar cycle persisted in the Maunder minimum even though normal sunspot activity was not observed. Our results also indicate that the ~23 year cycle was stronger during the Maunder minimum than later times in this record. |
