Cantrell, C.A. and Stedman, D.H. (1982). A possible technique for the measurement of atmospheric peroxy radicals. Geophysical Research Letters 9: doi: 10.1029/GL009i008p00846. issn: 0094-8276.

A system is described whereby ambient free radicals (predominantly HO2 and RO2) are detected by their ability to initiate a chain reaction oxidizing NO and CO. The NO2 thus produced by this ''chemical amplifier'' is modulated by substitution of N2 for CO and and detected by a liquid phase luminescence with luminol. A prototype system and results of ambient air sampling are presented.
