We report an observed correlation between short-term fluctuation in the wind field near the mesopause (h?83--90 km) and intensity variations of the auroral electrojet (h?110--115 km). Our results were obtained by comparing mesospheric wind variations obtained from the MST radar at Poker Flat, Alaska with electrojet intensity varitions determined by both the intensity of radar-auroral echoes and ground-based magnetometer data. The apparent correlation between these parameters suggests a partial control of the mesospheric wind field by the overlying current system.
