The assistance of the research community is being sought for an assessment that is currently in progress of the National Space Weather Program (NSWP). The totality of the NSWP is not as widely recognized as it deserves to be. My experience has been that most researchers have only a fragmentary appreciation of the NSWP. Some researchers see the program through the prism of the annual solicitations that are conducted by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for targeted "space weather" research. Others see some portions of the program reflected in the data sets collected and displayed on the Web site of the NOAA Space Environment Center, as well as by the Center's warnings on solar activity and its current sponsorship of Space Weather Week. Yet others have participated in various NASA Living With a Star studies and mission definitions. The importance of the program for the Department of Defense (DoD) and the protection of national security assets has largely eluded many, except possibly for those that have been involved in one of the DoD-sponsored Multi-University Research Initiatives (MURIs). The genesis of the technical magazine that you are reading is the NSWP. |
